Let Them Play

Enrolling a young child exclusively in activities with a heavy academic emphasis may result in that child being temporarily capable if what seems like remarkable scholastic accomplishments. However it is unlikely the long-term outcome will include solid educational foundations, impressive imagination and creativity, a strong love of learning, good social skill, and health self-esteem- all of which are required to ensure the child’s ultimate happiness and success. Also as time goes by, a child will have ever-increasing chances and a steadily growing capacity to improve her prospects through formal instruction on specific academic subjects. But early childhood constitutes her once –in-a-lifetime opportunity to benefit fully from the power of play.

Socrates once said “Education is the kindling of a flame, not the filling of a vessel.”

Time to Play, Time to Dream: Unscheduling Your Child

Would you be surprised to find your child’s day is as hectic as your own? People who study young children say that youngsters need time for unstructured activity—what adults sometimes call “free time” or “down time.”
