Parents’ influence affects long-term emotional development of their child

The emotional health of a child can be often overlooked by even the most enthusiastic parents seeking to provide a stimulating and enriching environment for their children. With the increased attention parents are giving towards raising physically fit children, it is equally important for parents to recognize the needs of their children’s emotional health and well-being.

In a recent interview, Baby Power Forever Kids (www.babypower.com) founder and CEO Linda Searles discussed the direct influence parents play in a child’s ultimate emotional stability. For decades, the New Jersey based franchisor has been in the business of shaping happy, healthy, confident kids. To help parents do the same, Linda dispenses practical, useful information to raise an emotionally healthy child.

Show your affection: A child needs to know that they’re loved and accepted for who they are. If they are deprived of love, it will affect the quality of future healthy relationships.

Acceptance: Your child may be different from most other children, and that is great! Your acceptance as a parent is monumental in their acceptance of themselves in terms of pride in what they do or passion for what they love and enjoy.

Encourage sharing of feelings: Make your child feel safe to talk about their feelings. Expressing emotion helps your child in managing their emotions and learning more about themselves. Children will have a strong foundation for later development if he or she can successfully manage personal feelings.

Use positive reinforcement: Create feelings of success and accomplishment for your child through everyday activity. Harsh negative criticism can shut a child down emotionally. Children are in a constant process of learning and growing; let their minds see limitless possibilities.

The methods created by Linda Searles have proven time after time to enhance communication between parent and child by creating an environment conducive for play, expression, discovery, and bonding.
